When I was pregnant, like most moms to be I started to think about not only the best quality but the best products for my baby and the world she was going to have to live in. One thing I really considered doing was using cloth diapers. With the 'green' revolution being the in thing right now, alot of people are considering cloth diapers instead of the disposable.
Cloth diapering seemed so much better for the baby- no nasty chemicals, no diaper going to sit in a landfill for hundreds of years and better for the baby's bottom! I could handle the extra time doing cloth diapers would take but honestly I didn't want to have to deal with or wash poopy diapers. I've seen what babies can do to a diaper- I knew I wouldn't be able to handle that. So I took the easy route and used disposable diapers. I didn't think there was another option out there until I found this cool alternative today.
They're called gDiapers - www.gDiapers.com. "The best of cloth and disposable in an earth-friendly diaper". They look really easy as you can just flush the liners or even compost them! They break down in about 90 days instead of the estimated 500 years that it takes a disposable diaper to go away. They're about the same cost as disposable diapers although you do have to buy the covers but those are even machine washable and reusable. You can even buy them at select natural retailers (think Whole Foods) or if you order from the website you can select their autoship option to ensure you never run out! Please let me know if you try these, I really want to hear all the pros and cons.
I also came across the Shower Baby at www.showerbaby.net. This is perfect for the person that doesn't want to go near a baby's butt even with wipes! It's a clever idea, seems easy to use and store but I think it's one of those baby items that you really won't need. I could see this being used more in a daycare setting than your every day life, but that's just my opinion. Take a look and let me know what you think.
Why parents drink The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper... ' Hello ? ' 'Is your daddy home?' he asked. ' Yes ,' whispered the small voice. May I talk with him?' The child whispered, ' No .' Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, 'Is your Mommy there?' ' Yes .' 'May I talk with her?' Again the small voice whispered, ' No .' Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?' ' Yes ,' whispered the child, ' a policeman '. Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?' ' No, he's busy ', whispered the child. 'Busy doing what?' ' Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman ,' came the whispered answer. Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, 'What is that noise?' ' A helicopter ' answered the whispering voice. 'What is going on there?' demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered, ' The search team just landed a helicopter .' Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, 'What are they searching for?' Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle... ' ME .'
The summer brings a flood of activity to our house. We always have something to do on the weekends and during the week my daughter won’t let us stay in the house! Because of this, we’ve been without cable for almost three years now. At first I just cancelled cable for the summer- we were never in the house and with a little one I was either asleep or occupied when anything good came on! When September came and all my show premieres were coming up, I started to panic. My clever husband though hooked up the old rabbit ears and we were able to get two stations in- ABC and NBC.
I was happy but then summer came again and my new favorite show Big Brother was on CBS! Oh what to do?? Luckily CBS posts the videos of the Big Brother episodes on their website the next day. I could watch them for free, with fewer commercials and at my desk less than 12 hours after it originally aired! I was so happy (I’m a serious boob tuber). Then in September I discovered that all the shows I watched on ABC were also posted like this! This made my life so much easier. I didn’t have to try to remember when my shows were on or that I was missing them if my daughter needed me. And we saved a ton of money! The average cable bill is $100 – I can think of a lot to do with $100. Another benefit is we do watch a lot less tv, which is something we really wanted to try to make a habit with our daughter. She has movies she watches and she loves watching the Wonder Pets on www.nickjr.com or the Disney shows found here on the computer.
I found a great post that lists many more places on the web to watch TV without cable or satellite (I highly recommend fancast- I'm slowly introducing my daughter to The Addams Family with it!). As a side note- the My Two Dollars blog has great resources and ideas on how to more "financially responsible". I've been following it for months now and I've learned alot!
Oh, and as a public service announcement there is only 51 days until Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy premier, yay! :) Enjoy the last month of summer, I'll talk to you soon.
